Update: Hilton Head intersection reopens after repairs to tree-damaged signal light

A tree fell and damaged a traffic light at the intersection of William Hilton Parkway and Whooping Crane Way early Sunday, resulting in traffic being diverted at the intersection for much of the day.

Crews arrived at 10:45 a.m. and worked several hours to repair the light and cut up and remove the fallen tree. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said at 3:50 p.m. that the intersection had reopened.

Drivers endured delays and were forced to find alternate routes during the repairs. The work affected the turn lane into Hilton Head Plantation.

The delay came as more than 700 cyclists are on the island for the 19th annual Pedal Hilton Head Island. The cycling event also affected several key roadways and pathways throughout the morning.

Cyclists began staging at Lowcountry Celebration Park on Pope Avenue at 7:15 a.m. with additional waves throughout the morning.
